A quick guide to understand 10G technology

10g solutions overview:

10 Gigabit Ethernet is also commonly known as 10GE, 10GbE, 10 GigE, and a few others. It is a group of computer networking technologies used to transmit Ethernet frames at 10 gigabits per second. With the entry of 10GB Ethernet, the long-established Gigabit Ethernet has raised its potential by almost ten times.

The new 10g ethernet showcases full-duplex point-to-point links. These are generally connected by network switches shared-medium. It has not been carried over from the previous Ethernet standards. This is why half-duplex operation and repeater hubs are not a part of it. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard encompasses several physical layers, also known as PHY. This version of ethernet can use both copper and fiber cabling. The bandwidth requirements and higher-grade cables are a few reasons the maximum distance over a copper cable is 100 meters.

The newest module standard is the enhanced small form-factor pluggable transceiver, SFP+. SFP+ is the most popular socket on 10GE systems, and their modules do only optical to electrical conversion. It doesn’t include clock and data recovery, which puts a higher burden on the host's channel equalization. SFP+ and the older SFP modules share a common physical form factor. It allows higher port density and the re-use of existing designs.

It helps create a reliable and fast backbone, store data, expand your server capabilities, experience unparalleled speed and enjoy reliable security. The maximum bandwidth on a gigabit Ethernet network is referred to as a node. It can send 1 billion bits per second which is tenfold the amount of the original ethernet. Therefore, all the 10GB interfaces on a router are primarily capable of performance.

Where can it be used:

This internet standard gradually became hugely popular among high-speed storage networks, companies, and metropolitan networks, and it remains in wide use today in businesses across the globe. The enterprises use 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches to provide Layer 2 networking for very high-speed network applications. It is most commonly used in the data center or server room and offers up to 10 billion data speed. Currently, there are seven 10 Gigabit Ethernet standards for optical cables (both single-mode and multimode fiber), in addition to criteria for twin axial (10GBase-CX4) and Category 6 and higher (10GBase-T) unshielded twisted pair (UTP) copper cable. 10 Gigabit Ethernet will support distances up to 300 meters on multimode fiber; it will support spaces up to 40 kilometers on single-mode fiber. 10GBase-T networks can span up to 100 meters. To access switches to serve the high-speed network better, 10g ethernet is used.
