10 Gigabit Ethernet is also commonly known as 10GE, 10GbE, 10 GigE, and a few others. It is a group of computer networking technologies used to transmit Ethernet frames at 10 gigabits per second. With the entry of 10GB Ethernet, the long-established Gigabit Ethernet has raised its potential by almost ten times.

The new 10g ethernet showcases full-duplex point-to-point links. These are generally connected by network switches shared-medium. It has not been carried over from the previous Ethernet standards. This is why half-duplex operation and repeater hubs are not a part of it. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard encompasses several physical layers, also known as PHY. Currently, there are seven 10 Gigabit Ethernet standards for optical cables (both single-mode and multimode fiber), in addition to criteria for twin axial (10GBase-CX4) and Category 6 and higher (10GBase-T) unshielded twisted pair (UTP) copper cable. 10 Gigabit Ethernet will support distances up to 300 meters on multimode fiber; it will support spaces up to 40 kilometers on single-mode fiber. 10GBase-T networks can span up to 100 meters. To access switches to serve the high-speed network better, 10g ethernet is used.
