What is Network?

In Information technology, a network is defined as the connection of at least two computer systems, either by a cable or a wireless connection.

What is Ethernet?

Ethernet is a widely used networking technology that allows devices to communicate and share data over a local area network (LAN).

Problem with Ethernet?

It was not designed for predictability. Ethernet traffic encounters congestion, units of data — called frames — can get buffered, shunted into queues or sometimes dropped and retransmitted.

What is Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN)?

TSN is Ethernet Plus

TSN is an extension/sub-standard of standard Ethernet that regulates data communication. Aiming to establish a time-sensitive mechanism for Ethernet protocol.

TSN provides timing accuracy within 1 microsecond and delivers predictable latency and guaranteed bandwidth.

Can TSN and Ethernet be used together

Yes, TSN is an extended data exchange technology based on Ethernet standard framework.

In the future Ethernet-based real time traffic will be converted into Ethernet based TSN (Time Sensitive Network, IEEE 802.1)

How does TSN Work?

All the devices have been synchronized by Time

IEEE Injected the concept of time into the Ethernet standard; deterministic networking works only if all connected devices — including endpoints, switches, bridges and gateways — share a common clock.

Time-Aware Scheduler allows assigning specific time slots to best-effort and high-priority Ethernet traffic, where only one traffic group (either high priority or background) can use the network at defined points in time.

Why does TSN matter?

TSN matter
  • Future of automation networks, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
  • Guarantees Time for mission-critical applications
  • Bounded latency and extremely low jitter

Benefits of TSN

  • Communication in real time without barriers
  • Support for machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Improves construction efficiency and reduce maintenance time, manpower and Cost
  • Enables true real-time monitoring of production, eliminating the need for data collection, uploading and reporting at fixed time points.
